Things to do in Germiston

Germiston can be found in Gauteng’s east rand and is SA’s 6th largest city with 70% of the western world’s gold passing through its refinery. It also has South Africa’s biggest railway junction and busiest civil airport, Rand Airport. Germiston boasts an impressive golf course, and also includes a number of great restaurants. The airport offers flying lessons to the enthusiasts, or can just take you on a flip if you prefer to stay out of the driver’s seat. Harvard Café at the Rand Airport is also a major draw card – here you can dine on the runway and often experience live entertainment while watching the planes come and go.

How to get to Germiston

While many choose to fly into OR Tambo International and then travel into Germiston, the most convenient way to get there is to fly directly to Rand Airport. You can choose to connect from OR Tambo if you are flying in on a major airline (only small planes can land in Germiston). Alternatively, a train will also take you right into the heart of the city. Should you however choose to come from OR Tambo International, getting to Germiston is relatively straightforward. When leaving the airport, take the Johannesburg (R24) highway. This highway will direct you to the N3 South to Durban/Germiston. You can either take the very 1st off ramp from here (Van Buuren) and follow signage into the more residential part of Germiston, or carry on until you reach the split to the M2 Johannesburg. If you take this split but veer left instead of heading into the CBD, you will be directed into the more industrial part of Germiston.

History & general info about Germiston

Like many other towns on the east rand, Germiston was founded during the early gold rush era. 2 prospectors, John Jack and August Simmer from Vacha in Germany found gold whilst prospecting on the farm of Elandsfontein and decided to call the place Germiston after John Jack’s childhood home of Germiston near Glasgow. Both men made their fortunes and soon an entire town sprung up next to the mine. In 1921, the world’s largest gold refinery, Rand Refinery, was established.
