History & general info about Brakpan
Brakpan started out as a settlement on the Weltevreden farm. The farm contained a large brackish lake that was considered by many to be the origin of the town’s name. In 1888, the areas surrounded Brakpan yielded coal and a settlement steadily grew in the area. A railway line was later introduced here and this served to further increase Brakpan’s growth. This growth was increased even more with the discovery of gold. At first, Brakpan was a suburb of Benoni and miners used the town as a perfectly located area to live in. in 1912, however, it became a separate town and gained municipal status of its own.
