Popular areas to stay in the Garden Route

The Garden Route is one of the most stunning areas in South Africa, if not the world. It encompasses the area between Mossel Bay and Storms River. The Garden Route is made up of a string of small towns, all set along a beautiful coastal drive. These towns include Mossel Bay, George, Oudtshoorn, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. All of these towns are definitely worth stopping over at, even if only for a day or so. Most people choose to stay in small bed and breakfasts along the route, or some self catering places. These are relatively affordable, if you book early, but during peak travel periods are in very short supply.

Things to do in the Garden Route

As the route goes past the Tsitsikamma forest, there are some magical hikes to go on. The three famous hikes you should try and go on are the Otter Trail, the Tsitsikamma trail and the Dolphin Trail.
You should also make a stop at the Cango Caves, which is a massive series of caverns made from Limestone that you can explore (with a guide).
Overall the best way to experience the Garden Route is to hire a car and take a slow drive through it, stopping off where and when you want and taking part in various activities such as swimming, scuba diving, rock climbing, and not forgetting to relax.
