Onrus info

The origins of Onrus lie on the Wagenboom grazing farm. In 1903 Onrust River and Seaside Company bought up all the surrounding farms and laid out the town. The companyÕs directors will forever be remembered in the town as it is their names that serve as street names in Onrus. As the town continued to grow, a hotel was set up to accommodate visitors. This however was destroyed in the 1970Õs to make way for the development of residential plots. By 1976, the town was granted municipal status. Over the years, many famous artists and writers have been drawn to the town. People such as Gregoire Boonzaier, Marjorie Wallace, Hennie Niemand Sr & Jr, Uys Krige and Jan Rabie have all called Onrus home at various stages in the townÕs history.
Onrus is a stone throw away from Hermanus and its natural beauty is a haven for artists. Many photographers, sculptors, painters and designers have chosen to call this small seaside village home. Besides the various galleries in the town, there are a number of art classes you can attend. Every weekend there is also a craft market where you can purchase a variety of local wares. The townÕs main beach is set in a bay and provides a huge expanse of soft white sand, ideal for a relaxing afternoon. A lagoon flows through into the sea and is ideal for children to play in. small boats and paddle-skis also make extensive use of the area. When venturing out of the protected lagoon area into the sea, you might be surprised at the strength of the currents. These provide ideal conditions for body-boarders and surfers, but sometimes prove a bit dangerous for casual swimmers. More suitable here would be DaviesÕ Pool Ð a completely natural pool in the Onrus River camp that is open to the sea but is very calm due to the surrounding low rocks. Other than the beaches, Onrus also offers wonderful hikes and walks. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve overlooks the town and offers spectacular views of local flora and fauna. Sport is also very popular here and you can partake in golf, hang-gliding, sailing, hiking, fishing and diving. Of course, being so close to Hermanus means that during breeding season there is a lot of exposure to the whales that enter the area. These beautiful mammals are reason alone to visit the area. There are also a number of vineyards and wine tours surrounding the town.

Map/Location

The nearest major airport is Cape Town International Airport, roughly 100-kilometers away. When leaving the airport, get onto the N2 towards Somerset West. Go through Somerset West and over Sir LowryÕs Pass Ð keep driving and you will eventually come to the Hermanus turn-off. Turn onto the road towards Hermanus Ð follow the signs and the road will take you into the town. You can hire a car at the airport and drive to the town yourself. If you would prefer to be driven however, there are numerous taxi and shuttle services on offer.
