Western Cape info
The western cape is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. It is large and diverse in both the natural landscape and the culture of the people that live there. Of course the most famous city in the Western Cape is Cape Town, boasting one of the most iconic natural wonders in South Africa, and the world, Table Mountain. However the province has much much more to offer. See the various regions that make up the Western Cape province below.
Overberg
The Overberg are is a stunning, if more rugged, part of the Western Cape. It lies between the garden Route and the Cape Peninsular. The area is made up of undulating hills, all surrounded by the ocean on one side and mountains on the other. The reason for the same is that the Overberg, is just over the mountains from Cape Town. The Overberg has some of the best land based whale watching in the world, all from Harmanus. There are plenty of farm stalls and farmers markets where you can pick up some fantastic produce. Visit Cape Agulhas, which is the true southernmost tip of Africa.
West Coast
The West Coast area stretches from Blaauwberg to Namaqualand - this is over 400km. The main town in the West Coast is Saldanha. There are no major cities or large towns, with most places being small dorpies (fishing villages). Being that the West Coast is not as developed as other parts of the province means that there are some gems to be found there. Cape Winelands
The Cape Winelands is the largest wine producing region in the country, and boasts some of the best wine towns in the world, including Paarl, Stelenbosch and Franschhoek. When you visit the Cape Winelands there really is only 1 thing to do and that is to explore and enjoy the various vineyards and wine farms. Take a tour of them, try the different wines, and enjoy the history, serenity and beauty of the region.
Cape Karoo
The Cape Karoo really is like it's own planet, an alien world of rock, sand and small outcrops of sharp plants. The largest town in this region is Beaufort West, with the rest of the towns being small villages, some of which are definitely worth a stop over. The Cape Karoo is an ancient world and you will feel like you have stepped back in time. The best thing to do is to stop over and spend a day or so at the Karoo National Park - the tranquility is amazing.
Garden Route
The Garden Route is, along with Cape Town, the most visited area in the Western Cape. It is one of the official scenic routes around the country, and follows the coast all the way up to the Eastern Cape. Its capital is George, with a few of the other well known towns being Plett, Mossel Bay, Outdshoorn and Knysna. The best way to explore this region is by car, so hop on the route and simply drive and stop randomly along the way. The smaller towns will have cheaper prices, but owing to the routes popularity prices are higher than elsewhere.
Cape Town
Cape Town is undoubtely the tourist capital of not only the Western Cape, but also of South Africa. It really has so much going for it, notably, Table Mountain. The other peaks include Lions Head and the Twelve Apostles. The city seems to be built around nature, with a good hike or open area never far from anywhere in the city. The beaches are plentiful and beautiful, however the water is freezing. Another very popular spot is the V&A Waterfront, which is packed with restaurants and bars. The city has a great vibe about it, very relaxed and laid back. However it doesnt have the best weather in the country - but you cant have everything can you.
