We also list the direct contact details of each establishment so you can then choose the one you want and contact them directly.
Things to do in Baardskeerdersbos
Baardskeerdersbos is a secluded little Afrikaans-speaking town consisting of not much more than a collection of houses, a church, a pub housed in an old school building and a local shop. What is appealing about this small town is its personality and the surrounding landscape and attractions. With some of the houses still in their original mudstone form, and an old church that was built in 1921, the town has a lot of old world charm. The valley of Baardskeerdersbos also happens to fall within a fynbos biome forming part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, and the fertile soil supports many flower farms and vineyards as well as providing ideal grazing and training land for many cattle farms and horse-steads.
The nearby reserves and national parks provide ideal locations for nature loving travelers to hike through exciting eco-systems. Favourites in the area are the Agulhas National Park, the De Hoop Nature Reserve and the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens. The Agulhas National Park is where you would find the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, at Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. The lighthouse was built to help ships that were trying to navigate through what was then called “The Cape of Storms” but unfortunately it did not stop some 250 ships from being wrecked off the coast of this point. The graveyard of ships which resulted from this is also a popular attraction in the area.
De Hoop Nature Reserve is a great spot for whale watching as well as taking in some local Khoi heritage. And the nearby town of Gansbaai is a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts as the local marine life is abundant with a variety of fish but, as a result, this also happens to be a popular location for the infamous Great White Shark. For the daredevil traveler, it is possible to share the waters with these predators of the sea with a bit of shark cage diving.
The Harold Porter Botanical Gardens is a ten hectare cultivated fynbos garden complemented by a further 190 hectares of natural, wild fynbos. Mongooses, otters, dassies and baboons are frequently spotted in this reserve that incorporates afro montane forest, wetland, coastal dune and fynbos vegetation.
How to get to Baardskeerdersbos
Baardskeerdersbos is situated roughly 148km from Cape Town, which is approximately a two hour drive. Travelers should take the N2 highway out of Cape Town, travelling towards Hermanus and Gansbaai. Baardskeerdersbos is located 25 kilometres from Gansbaai.
History & general info about Baardskeerdersbos
Baardskeerdersbos has a very unusual name but there is an equally unusual story behind that name. The small, and predominantly Afrikaans speaking town, was named after an insect which is prevalent in the surrounding bush area. This small, spider-like insect is referred to as a “baardskeerder” or “beard-shaver” because of its habit of cutting human hair in order to build its nest.

We also list the direct contact details of each establishment so you can then choose the one you want and contact them directly.
Things to do in Riviersonderend
Some consider this town to be part of the Garden route, although technically, a visit to this little village would require a detour from the actual route. However, the detour is well worth the extra kilometres, as the beauty of the Riviersonderend Valley is definitely a sight not to be missed. Surrounded by farmlands, this natural gem has been the backdrop to many sightings of South Africa’s national bird, the Blue Crane. For the hiking enthusiasts, be sure to take advantage of the many hiking trails to be found in the area, especially the Kleinbergie Hiking Trail. This trail affords you the opportunity to see some relics of the region’s history, the signal canons of the Overberg Signal Canon system, which can be found along the Old Cape Wagon Route on this trail. You will also find beautiful displays of fynbos as you hike and once you reach the Sonderend River, you can enjoy swimming, fishing and canoeing as well. Other trails in the area, such as Riviersonderend Canyon Trail and Suicide Gorge Trail, also provide travelers with kloofing opportunities as well as breathtaking canyon and waterfall scenery.
The town itself also boasts a nine hole golf course, and is only an hour’s drive from the coast and some spectacular beaches.
The breathtakingly natural backdrop of Riviersonderend also means that t nearby are many exciting nature reserves and conservation parks, which provide nature-lovers with the ideal setting to hike in nature and enjoy the local flora and fauna. Amongst these is the Boosmansbos Wilderness Area, which constitutes part of the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve. Boosmansbos is the perfect trip for adventurous hikers as it consists of a slightly more difficult hiking trail than what many people may be used to. Also nearby is the Riviersonderend Conservation Area and not to be missed, the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve. Leopards do inhabit this reserve but are very rarely seen. However, you can enjoy the fynbos which cascades over this mountainous area and you may be able to spot the slightly less elusive grey rhebuck, klipspringer, common duiker and grysbok. Beautiful river scenery and waterfalls are also treasures in this reserve.
History enthusiasts and art lovers alike would enjoy a trip to the Riviersonderend Photo Museum. The town’s history is captured in the form of photographic art and displayed in this museum.
How to get to Riviersonderend
Riviersonderend is situated approximately 160 kilometres from Cape Town, between Caledon and Swellendam. The best way to travel to this little farming village is to fly to Cape Town International airport and then hire a car and drive out of the city on the N2 highway, all the way to Riviersonderend.
History & general info about Riviersonderend
Riviersonderend was established in 1922, when a local woman by the name of Edith McIntyre sold her farm to the local Dutch Reform Church to establish housing plots for their congregation. The name originally allocated to the new little town was to be “Nuwedorp”. However, the local tribesman of the area, the Hessequa, referred to the river that flowed near the town as “Kanna-kan-kann” meaning “water, endless water”, and some of the local residents wanted the name of the town to encompass this. The name of Riviersonderend for the town may, therefore, have originated from the Hessequa name for the Sonderend River.

Things to do in Elgin
Situated just over the mountainous area of Sir Lowry’s Pass, the gorgeous Elgin Valley is an enchanting combination of vineyards, orchards, olive groves and forest. Certainly, before you even arrive in Elgin Valley itself, it is worthwhile to park your car in one of the designated parking areas along Sir Lowry’s Pass and admire the spectacular view of the False Bay area, before descending into this fertile valley. The valley of Elgin is not a well-known holiday destination. However it is home to a few private game reserves, and is the perfect location to indulge in many outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking and kloofing, or simply taking advantage of one of the many tours that pass through this area. For the slightly less energetic, there is also a wealth of wildlife in this valley making it an ideal spot for birdwatching, fly-fishing as well as trout and bass fishing. It is no surprise that the Elgin Valley forms part of the Four Passes Fruit Route due to the name this valley has created for itself within the Agricultural Industry in South Africa, but it also forms part of the Green Mountain Eco Route which happens to the first biodiversity wine route in the world.
For nature lovers, it is always a treat to enjoy a day outing to a nearby nature reserve, and Elgin has many private and public reserves to choose from. Amongst the most popular is the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve which has stunning hiking trails and cascading waterfalls as well as breathtaking flora and fauna in the form of South Africa’s ever popular fynbos , large and small species of buck and if you are really lucky you may even spot a leopard. The entire valley forms part of the Kogelberg Biosphere, which is known to be a natural paradise, virtually unspoilt by our carbon footprint.
Also, for some live entertainment, be sure to take in a show at the Paul Cluver Forest Amphitheatre situated in the Elgin Valley. The amphitheatre is comprised of a 600 seater arena embraced in a towering Eucalyptus Forest. Paul Cluver happens to be a wine estate, so they encourage tourists to buy a bottle of their estate wine, pack a picnic basket, relax beneath the Eucalyptus and stars and enjoy the entertainment, which has been specially selected to match the acoustics of this natural amphitheatre.
And no trip to Elgin Valley would be complete without a visit to the Elgin Valley Market where you can browse through over 30 stalls selling everything from fresh produce to locally crafted ornaments. It is truly a testament to the natural country lifestyle of the people of Elgin Valley and provides tourists with their own little taste of that enviable lifestyle.
How to get to Elgin
A short road trip from Cape Town, Elgin is situated an hour’s drive from Cape Town along the N2 highway. Once you have driven over Sir Lowry’s Pass, you descend into the beautiful Elgin Valley.
History & general info about Elgin
The Elgin Valley is part of the UNESCO protected Kogelberg Biosphere and is one of the most renowned and beautiful fruit growing areas in South Africa, particularly well known for its apples and pears. In terms of political and socio-economic transformation within South Africa following the 1994 elections which officially ended Apartheid in the country, the area of Oaks Village in this beautiful valley is a testament to the change that has been occurring in this country. Oaks Village consists of 106 homes that were given to the farmworkers of a local fruit farm, affording 700 previously disadvantaged people ownership of their own land.

Things to do in Malgas
Situated on the banks of the Breede River in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, this gem is the perfect location for a short getaway for nature lovers. The accommodation is limited due to the fact that the town itself is not very big. However, should you manage to secure yourself one of the houses or cottages located on the banks of the river, you may be amazed to see that most of these riverside accommodations have their own private jetty and motorboat. The wildlife in and around this area is abundant, with the Breede River having a reputation as one of the best fishing estuaries in South Africa. Anglers can look forward to spotting and possibly catching species such as Cob, Spotted Grunter and Garrick. For the birdwatchers or ornithologists, this river habitat also has a wide variety of birdlife, including the beautiful Fish Eagle, Osprey, Fish Owls and Kingfisher. The surrounding mountains also have an abundance of fynbos that hikers can admire as they enjoy a stroll through the area. The river itself is a haven for those who enjoy watersports.
Something unique to Malgas would be the opportunity to cross the Breede River on the only operational pontoon in South Africa. It is a popular tourist attraction in the area and operates daily from sunrise to sunset. Malgas would be the only location in South Africa where travelers could enjoy a pontoon trip across a river, and the experience is definitely worth the effort.
Other tourist attractions located near to Malgas are the Agulhas National Park as well as the De Hoop Nature Reserve. Both of these locations provide whale watching opportunities in season and are also popular for hiking and birdwatching. The Agulhas National Park is the location of the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas. At this point you will find the Cape Agulhas lighthouse as well as the graveyard of ships just off the coast, where approximately 250 ships were wrecked in what was then known as the “Cape of Storms.” De Hoop Nature Reserve has been classified as a World Heritage Site, and aside from the nature aspects of the park, it also holds relics of the early Khoi inhabitants of the region.
For wine-lovers, part of the Breedekloof Wine route can also be found near to Malgas, the entire route consisting of 22 wineries.

History & general info about Malgas
This town’s history lies in the old pontoon built there. It enabled the locals to collect their supplies directly from the counters of the Barry Stores located on the banks of the Bree River. A blind traveler named James Holman who visited the area described the pontoon as “a floating bridge, 15 metres long and 4 metres wide.” This bridge would then be pulled across the river with ropes. Of course this was not entirely safe as many accidents would occur where things would slip off the pontoon, but now it has been improved with a system of rails around the edges to ensure more safety while crossing the river.
