The most well known town in the Green Kalahari is Upington, however there are quite a few other towns, namely: Andriesvale, Augrabies, and Postmasburg. Most people will visit Augrabies as it has the Augrabies Falls. The reason the area is called the Green Kalahari is because although the land is semi arid desert, as the Orange River flows through it, on the banks it is amazingly lush and fertile.

The Kalahari is a place like no other, with a landscape so foreign it looks almost alien-like. The red sands seem to go on forever, with dunes the size of mountains and a sun that seems to never set. The Kalahari is not a true desert as it does get roughly 250mm of rainfall per year, although it is hot, humid and dry. One of the most popular places to visit is the Eye of Kuruman, which is an amazing spring that pumps millions of litres of water.

The Diamond Fields are of course that area where the massive diamond rush took place decades ago and helped shape not only that region but the country as a whole. The Diamond Fields is one of the smaller areas in the Nothern Cape, and includes the following towns: Kimberley, Modder River, Warrenton, Windsorton, Barkely West, Hartswater, Delportshoop, and Jan Kempdorp. The main visited town (and indeed the capital) is Kimberley.

Of course no trip to Kimberley would be complete without going to the Big Hole.  There is an observation deck that one can walk out on and look deep down into the hole, although a substantial part of it has been filled up with water. Another very exciting this to do is to go on a 4×4 trail. Being sparsely populated the Diamond Field area offers planetiful sand dunes that seem to stretch forever.

The Northern Cape is a sparsely populated, but beautiful part of the country. It’s capital is Kimberley, famous for its mining history and the subsequent Big Hole. Other towns of interest include Colesberg and De Aar. Poeple often stay in these areas when travelling from Johannesburg to Cape town. What exactly is there to do in a sparsely populated area that, for all intensive purposes, is in a desert. Here are just a few ideas.
Go on a 4×4 trail in the dunes. Of course go to Kimberley and peer into the Big Hole. However dont just do that, take a tour through the old city and see what life was like for the miners. Go and look at Khoisan Art in the Karoo, and visit the Vanderkloof Dam – the second largest dam in South Africa. The Dam is also a tourist resort where you can take part in many water activities.
A definite must see is the Augrabies Falls National Park, which is simply breathtaking. The falls are actually the 6th largest waterfall in the world. Finally you should visit the Eye of Kuruman. This is a natural fountain (the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere actually), and delivers 20 million litres of water…daily.
