Although there are plenty of places to stay further away from the beach, most people choose to stay as close as possible. Most places to stay will either be with a sea view, or close enough to walk to the beach.
Some history: Port Shepstone was founded when marble was discovered near the Mzimkulu River in 1867. 200 Norwegians initially settled there to help develop the land, but instead devoted their time to developing the sea trade and so the harbour was put together. However once the train was established and a link to Durban harbour built, the Port Shepstone harbour fell into dissue, filled up with silt and has snce become unuseable.
Things to do in Port Shepstone
You can visit the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, go to the lighthouse, go golfing, as well as visit the blue flag status beaches. Basically take it easy, relax and spend time lazing around.
