History & general info about Ladysmith

Associated with the town is the world famous Grammy Award winning group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The Anglo-Boer War dominates the town’s past where the Boers conducted a famous siege in October 1899 for 118 days. The Boers were trying to stop the British from continuing north into the Boer republic of Transvaal. The young Mohandas K Ghandi, later known as Mohatma, was a stretcher bearer during that war and there is a monument of him in the town. Ladysmith was named after the wife of Sir Harry Smith, who was the Cape Colony’s first Governor.
