Things to do in Boksburg

One of Boksburg’s main attractions is Boksburg Lake – more than 150 000 square metres of water surrounded by beautiful lawns and trees. Many people come here to enjoy the scenery and spend the day boating, fishing, hiking or picnicking with loved ones. East Rand Mall also attracts many visitors and boasts top class shopping, dining and movie experiences. Located right near the mall is Wild Waters – a water theme park offering swimming and water slides. There is also a popular nightclub on the premises that entertains many. For younger children, a visit to the Bokkie Park is a must. Here farm animals and fun activities abound and children can play in a safe, natural environment. Boksburg is also seeped in architectural history and tours around the city are popular among many visitors to the area.

How to get to Boksburg

Travelling from OR Tambo International Airport into Boksburg is extremely easy. Located right next to each other, the trip shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, depending on where in Boksburg you wish to travel. When leaving the airport, get onto the R21 to Boksburg. This road will lead you directly into Boksburg. Once there, areas are well marked and you should be able to follow signs to your chosen destination in the city. Busses, shuttles and taxis all do the route regularly throughout the day so transport shouldn’t be an issue.

History & general info about Boksburg

Boksburg gets its name from one of the South African Republics past State Secretary’s, W. Eduard Bok. The city first came to life in 1887 after gold was discovered. The Mining Commissioner at the time, Montague White, chose to build a large dam in the city during its mining heyday. The dam however stood empty for years and was dubbed White’s Folly by many. A flashflood in 1889 brought an end to this when the dam immediately filled and to this day Boksburg Lake is a major attraction in the city. In 1890, a railway line was built to link Boksburg to Johannesburg, further aiding the growth of the city.

Things to do in Germiston

Germiston can be found in Gauteng’s east rand and is SA’s 6th largest city with 70% of the western world’s gold passing through its refinery. It also has South Africa’s biggest railway junction and busiest civil airport, Rand Airport. Germiston boasts an impressive golf course, and also includes a number of great restaurants. The airport offers flying lessons to the enthusiasts, or can just take you on a flip if you prefer to stay out of the driver’s seat. Harvard Café at the Rand Airport is also a major draw card – here you can dine on the runway and often experience live entertainment while watching the planes come and go.

How to get to Germiston

While many choose to fly into OR Tambo International and then travel into Germiston, the most convenient way to get there is to fly directly to Rand Airport. You can choose to connect from OR Tambo if you are flying in on a major airline (only small planes can land in Germiston). Alternatively, a train will also take you right into the heart of the city. Should you however choose to come from OR Tambo International, getting to Germiston is relatively straightforward. When leaving the airport, take the Johannesburg (R24) highway. This highway will direct you to the N3 South to Durban/Germiston. You can either take the very 1st off ramp from here (Van Buuren) and follow signage into the more residential part of Germiston, or carry on until you reach the split to the M2 Johannesburg. If you take this split but veer left instead of heading into the CBD, you will be directed into the more industrial part of Germiston.

History & general info about Germiston

Like many other towns on the east rand, Germiston was founded during the early gold rush era. 2 prospectors, John Jack and August Simmer from Vacha in Germany found gold whilst prospecting on the farm of Elandsfontein and decided to call the place Germiston after John Jack’s childhood home of Germiston near Glasgow. Both men made their fortunes and soon an entire town sprung up next to the mine. In 1921, the world’s largest gold refinery, Rand Refinery, was established.

Guest Houses Alberton

Bella Chateau Bella Chateau Exclusive Guest House is a 3 Star grading with S.A. Tourism Council and AA Travel. Situated in the up market security estate of Alberante, Alberton. We are just 20-minutes drive from Tambo International Airport..More Info

Things to do in Alberton

Alberton functions primarily as a residential centre, with the majority of residents commuting to nearby suburbs and cities to make a living. It is situated along the banks of the Natal Spruit and is in close proximity to both Johannesburg and Pretoria. Alberton is rich in history and many tours are offered to see the architectural history of the city. Alberton now boasts large industrial areas and there are a variety of shopping centres, libraries, hospitals and entertainment facilities available. There is an excellent action-sporting arena, and Rietvlei Boeremark is a fresh produce and crafts market that warrants a visit. East Rand Mall is also a mere few minute drive away.

How to get to Alberton

Getting to Alberton from OR Tambo International Airport is relatively easy. When leaving the airport, take the Johannesburg (R24) highway. This highway will direct you to the N3 South to Durban. Once on the N3, you continue following the N3 Durban signs until reaching the Elands interchange. Here you need to take the Vereeniging (R59) lane and follow the R59 to the Michelle Ave off ramp. Turning off here will take you into the city and signposts will direct you to your relevant location. A number of busses, shuttles and taxis travel into Alberton daily so getting there should be quick and easy.

History & general info about Alberton

Alberton has its roots in 11 hectares of farmland that a 13-year-old Johannes Petrus Meyer purchased from his stepfather. He built a mansion and started a general dealer’s store in 1890. When he died, his brother Johan Georg Meyer took over the farm. After the war, a General Alberts chose to buy part of the land from Meyer in the hope of splitting it up and selling it off – he decided to name this land Alberton. By 1918, the town had families living in it and the first town hall and factory were built. The first company to establish itself in Alberton was CJ Fuchs (Pty) Ltd – a company that is still trading in the city today.

Things to do in Nigel

Nigel is a small town seeped in mining history. About an hours’ drive from OR Tambo International Airport, the town is very small and doesn’t hold many of the large bustling attractions of some of South Africa’s other towns. There is a fairly established arts and crafts community that always draws visitors. The 18-hole golf course is also another of the town’s major attractions. The main draw card however is its proximity to the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. Here you will see a variety of buck, zebra, antelope, wildebeest and bird species. There are also a variety of hiking trails, including beginner trails and overnight trails.

How to get to Nigel

Nigel is situated almost an hour away from the OR Tambo International Airport and is accessible by shuttle, bus or taxi. You can also hire a car at the airport if you’re happy to drive there on your own. When leaving the airport to go to Nigel, you need to take R21 exit to Boksburg, and then link onto the N12 Witbank highway. When you reach the Snake Road off ramp, take it and turn right onto the main road into Brakpan. This road will take you to the N17 Springs off ramp which, once you’ve gone through the toll, will follow through to the Nigel/Springs Road. Once you’ve turned left onto the road you can follow the signs to get to your relevant location within Nigel.

History & general info about Nigel

Nigel started out as a farm called Varkensfontein owned by Petrus Johannes Marais in 1882. Marais allowed a prospector to prospect for gold on his property, and was one day approached with an offer by someone to buy his farm. Curious by the interest shown in his farm, he decided to do more exploring into his own property and found that his farm was indeed very rich in gold. At the time, Petrus Johannes Marais was reading a book by Sir Walter Scott entitled “The Fortunes of Nigel”. The story told of a young man who was misled by some people but eventually achieved his goals in life. Attributing his own luck to the novel, Marais decided to call his company Nigel, which is how the town of Nigel eventually came into being.

Things to do in Brakpan

Brakpan can proudly boast one of the major casinos in the Gauteng area, namely Carnival City. Besides gambling, the casino offers restaurants, theatres and children’s entertainment areas. Feeding off the casino is Carnival Mall, also offering great shopping and dining experiences. There are also a number of lakes and a couple of art galleries in the area. For the schools and general recreation, the town has a large, well-established public swimming pool that draws many swimmers for both fun and for serious training. There are also function venues around some of the lakes in the area.

How to get to Brakpan

Getting to Brakpan from the airport is quick and easy. Following the R24 towards Boksburg/East Rand, take the N12 Witbank highway off ramp. Follow this highway east to the Snake Road off ramp. Once you’ve taken Snake Road, turn right and head straight towards Brakpan. Signs in the area will point you to the various suburbs within the city. Shuttles, taxis and busses all include Brakpan on their travel routes and can get you there quickly and safely.

History & general info about Brakpan

Brakpan started out as a settlement on the Weltevreden farm. The farm contained a large brackish lake that was considered by many to be the origin of the town’s name. In 1888, the areas surrounded Brakpan yielded coal and a settlement steadily grew in the area. A railway line was later introduced here and this served to further increase Brakpan’s growth. This growth was increased even more with the discovery of gold. At first, Brakpan was a suburb of Benoni and miners used the town as a perfectly located area to live in. in 1912, however, it became a separate town and gained municipal status of its own.

Things to do in Springs

Springs first drew attention when people flocked to live around the natural springs in the area. The town later grew into a coal mining area and today is one of the industrial centres of the country that is well-known for its manufacturing and engineering industries. Although not known for a good nightlife or abundant family activities, the city has a suburban feel to it and is easily accessible to all the towns on the East Rand. It is also in close driving distance to East Rand Mall, east Rand Flea Market and Boksburg Lake.

How to get to Springs

Springs is relatively easy to get to from the airport. When leaving OR Tambo International you need to follow the R24 towards Boksburg/East Rand, and then turn left onto the N12 Witbank highway. You need to drive east past Benoni and then take the R51 Springs/Daveyton off ramp and turn right. This road proceeds towards Springs. There are a number of shuttles and taxi operators that service the area, and the city also has a fairly high railway traffic volume.

History & general info about Springs

Springs first came into being because of the large number of underground springs in the area. The discovery of coal in the area in 1888 jumpstarted proper development and the Rand Tram was built in 1890 to carry the coal to Johannesburg. The railway terminus led to the development of a small town and this was the humble beginning of today’s city. The coalmines unfortunately were plagued by fires and other serious mishaps and eventually had to close. The coalmines were quickly replaced by gold mining and the development of a number of subsidiary industries. Today the city is still very industrial and evidence of the past activities are visible everywhere.
