Many people come here to enjoy the scenery and spend the day boating, fishing, hiking or picnicking with loved ones. Boksburg is also seeped in architectural history and tours around the city are popular among many visitors to the area.

How to get to Boksburg

Travelling from OR Tambo International Airport into Boksburg is extremely easy. Located right next to each other, the trip shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, depending on where in Boksburg you wish to travel. When leaving the airport, get onto the R21 to Boksburg. This road will lead you directly into Boksburg. Once there, areas are well marked and you should be able to follow signs to your chosen destination in the city. Busses, shuttles and taxis all do the route regularly throughout the day so transport shouldn’t be an issue.

History & general info about Boksburg

Boksburg gets its name from one of the South African Republics past State Secretary’s, W. Eduard Bok. The city first came to life in 1887 after gold was discovered. The Mining Commissioner at the time, Montague White, chose to build a large dam in the city during its mining heyday. The dam however stood empty for years and was dubbed White’s Folly by many. A flashflood in 1889 brought an end to this when the dam immediately filled and to this day Boksburg Lake is a major attraction in the city. In 1890, a railway line was built to link Boksburg to Johannesburg, further aiding the growth of the city.

Accommodation in Germiston

Looking for for accommodation in Germiston? We have accommodation in all areas of Germiston, and by type of Umhlanga accommodation such as b&b, self catering, hotel and guest houses etc.

Please email us at marc @ travelsupermarket.co.za telling us what you are looking for and we will send you a complete list of the places to stay in Germiston matching your needs. We also list the direct contact details of each establishment so you can then choose the one you want and contact them directly.

Things to do in Germiston

Germiston can be found in Gauteng’s east rand and is SA’s 6th largest city with 70% of the western world’s gold passing through its refinery. It also has South Africa’s biggest railway junction and busiest civil airport, Rand Airport. Germiston boasts an impressive golf course, and also includes a number of great restaurants. The airport offers flying lessons to the enthusiasts, or can just take you on a flip if you prefer to stay out of the driver’s seat. Harvard Café at the Rand Airport is also a major draw card – here you can dine on the runway and often experience live entertainment while watching the planes come and go.

How to get to Germiston

While many choose to fly into OR Tambo International and then travel into Germiston, the most convenient way to get there is to fly directly to Rand Airport. You can choose to connect from OR Tambo if you are flying in on a major airline (only small planes can land in Germiston). Alternatively, a train will also take you right into the heart of the city. Should you however choose to come from OR Tambo International, getting to Germiston is relatively straightforward. When leaving the airport, take the Johannesburg (R24) highway. This highway will direct you to the N3 South to Durban/Germiston. You can either take the very 1st off ramp from here (Van Buuren) and follow signage into the more residential part of Germiston, or carry on until you reach the split to the M2 Johannesburg. If you take this split but veer left instead of heading into the CBD, you will be directed into the more industrial part of Germiston.

History & general info about Germiston

Like many other towns on the east rand, Germiston was founded during the early gold rush era. 2 prospectors, John Jack and August Simmer from Vacha in Germany found gold whilst prospecting on the farm of Elandsfontein and decided to call the place Germiston after John Jack’s childhood home of Germiston near Glasgow. Both men made their fortunes and soon an entire town sprung up next to the mine. In 1921, the world’s largest gold refinery, Rand Refinery, was established.

Nigel is a small town seeped in mining history. About an hours’ drive from OR Tambo International Airport, the town is very small and doesn’t hold many of the large bustling attractions of some of South Africa’s other towns. There is a fairly established arts and crafts community that always draws visitors. The 18-hole golf course is also another of the town’s major attractions. The main draw card however is its proximity to the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. Here you will see a variety of buck, zebra, antelope, wildebeest and bird species. There are also a variety of hiking trails, including beginner trails and overnight trails.

How to get to Nigel

Nigel is situated almost an hour away from the OR Tambo International Airport and is accessible by shuttle, bus or taxi. You can also hire a car at the airport if you’re happy to drive there on your own. Once you’ve turned left onto the road you can follow the signs to get to your relevant location within Nigel.

History & general info about Nigel

Nigel started out as a farm called Varkensfontein owned by Petrus Johannes Marais in 1882. Marais allowed a prospector to prospect for gold on his property, and was one day approached with an offer by someone to buy his farm. Curious by the interest shown in his farm, he decided to do more exploring into his own property and found that his farm was indeed very rich in gold. At the time, Petrus Johannes Marais was reading a book by Sir Walter Scott entitled “The Fortunes of Nigel”. The story told of a young man who was misled by some people but eventually achieved his goals in life. Attributing his own luck to the novel, Marais decided to call his company Nigel, which is how the town of Nigel eventually came into being.

This growth was increased even more with the discovery of gold. At first, Brakpan was a suburb of Benoni and miners used the town as a perfectly located area to live in. in 1912, however, it became a separate town and gained municipal status of its own.

Looking for for accommodation in Springs? We have accommodation in all areas of Springs, and by type of Springs accommodation such as b&b, self catering, hotel and guest houses etc.

Please email us at marc @ travelsupermarket.co.za telling us what you are looking for and we will send you a complete list of the places to stay in Springs matching your needs. We also list the direct contact details of each establishment so you can then choose the one you want and contact them directly.

Things to do in Springs

Springs first drew attention when people flocked to live around the natural springs in the area. The town later grew into a coal mining area and today is one of the industrial centres of the country that is well-known for its manufacturing and engineering industries. Although not known for a good nightlife or abundant family activities, the city has a suburban feel to it and is easily accessible to all the towns on the East Rand. It is also in close driving distance to East Rand Mall, east Rand Flea Market and Boksburg Lake.

How to get to Springs

Springs is relatively easy to get to from the airport. When leaving OR Tambo International you need to follow the R24 towards Boksburg/East Rand, and then turn left onto the N12 Witbank highway. You need to drive east past Benoni and then take the R51 Springs/Daveyton off ramp and turn right. This road proceeds towards Springs. There are a number of shuttles and taxi operators that service the area, and the city also has a fairly high railway traffic volume.

History & general info about Springs

Springs first came into being because of the large number of underground springs in the area. The discovery of coal in the area in 1888 jumpstarted proper development and the Rand Tram was built in 1890 to carry the coal to Johannesburg. The railway terminus led to the development of a small town and this was the humble beginning of today’s city. The coalmines unfortunately were plagued by fires and other serious mishaps and eventually had to close. The coalmines were quickly replaced by gold mining and the development of a number of subsidiary industries. Today the city is still very industrial and evidence of the past activities are visible everywhere.

Accommodation in Benoni

Looking for for accommodation in Benoni? We have accommodation in all areas of Benoni, and by type of Benoni accommodation such as b&b, self catering, hotel and guest houses etc.

Please email us at marc @ travelsupermarket.co.za telling us what you are looking for and we will send you a complete list of the places to stay in Benoni matching your needs. We also list the direct contact details of each establishment so you can then choose the one you want and contact them directly.

Things to do in Benoni

Benoni is a diverse city that sprang up from a small gold mining town. While there is still some evidence of the old mining days, very few mines are still active today. Many of the mines are now used by outdoor enthusiasts for sand boarding and mountain biking. The Benoni Heliport, a major helicopter airport, is also located between the mines. The city has now turned its business focus more toward the industrial and service industry. When in the city centre, a visit should be paid to the local museum to get a better understanding of Benoni’s history. Another timeless classic of the city is the Bunny Park. For years families have flocked here to let their kids play among the rabbits and see the variety of farm animals and bird life. Sport lovers also regularly visit Willowmoore Park which plays host to a variety of local and international cricket tournaments. There are also a couple of malls offering shopping, movies and restaurants – Lakeside Mall and Northmead Square being the main ones. The city also houses a couple of golf courses and country clubs, with the Ebotse Golf Estate being the latest and most up market offering around.

How to get to benoni

Benoni is in very close proximity to the OR Tambo International Airport and getting there is quick and easy. Taking the R24 to Pretoria, you can either take the Atlas Road off ramp into the city, or drive to the Benoni off ramp and turn right. If you are staying at a guesthouse of hotel, shuttle services are usually provided. If not, taxis and busses regularly go into Benoni. Benoni also has a train station receiving traffic from some of the other large city centres in and around Johannesburg.

History & general info about Benoni

Benoni found its beginnings in 1881 when the then surveyor-general Johan Rissik named the area Government Farm Benoni (son of my sorrow) after the Hebrew name given by Rachel to her son in the biblical book of Genesis. When gold was discovered in the area in 1887, Cornishmen established the Chimes Mine and by 1904 the mining company undertook the planning of the rapidly expanding mining town. A river was dammed into a series of dams for mining use. These lakes still exist today and have given rise to Benoni’s nickname as “The City Of Lakes’. Thousands of trees were also planted in the area and Benoni was declared a township in 1906. By 1922 the Rand Revolt (aka 1922 Strike) led to thousands of miners going on strike. The strike quickly led to open revolt and active fighting between the miners and the newly formed South African Air Force. During this revolt, Benoni was used as one of the miner’s headquarters and much fighting took place in and around the area. The city was also used to train many pilots during World War II. A visit to the Benoni Museum documents this era very well.

Because of the close proximity, many business-people find this up market suburb to be the perfect stopover on their business trips and a number of guest houses and spas have popped up to accommodate this. The city is old and established, meaning that the streets are lined with large trees and spacious houses. The lush gardens have given rise to a prolific bird life and many people enjoy bird watching in the area. Gillooly’s farm is perfect for this – this is an outdoor picnic and family venue in the heart of Bedfordview filled with trees, lakes and plenty of open spaces to make braais and allow the kids to run around in. There are a number of great shopping centres in the area, including Eastgate and Bedford Centre, and Bruma Flea Market offers in excess of 600 traders showing their wares. Bedfordview also has a very cosmopolitan restaurant and nightlife area.

How to get to Bedfordview

The family subdivided the land among themselves and tried to mine it for gold. When these efforts proved futile, the land was made available for agriculture. Today Bedfordview has a thriving business community. With it’s close proximity to both the airport and the Johannesburg CBD, a number of manufacturing, retail and construction companies have chosen to set up their head offices here. Things to do in Edenvale

Because of it’s strategic location halfway between OR Tambo International Airport and the Johannesburg city centre, Edenvale is in short driving distance of many attractions, including large shopping centres such as Eastgate and East Rand Mall, as well as family venues such as Gillooly’s Farm. Bruma Lake fleamarket is also only minutes away from the city and proves to be a great tourist attraction for many. The city itself has a couple of great offerings for active individuals. There is a great indoor sports arena, and the local skydiving school offers courses as well as tandem jumps. There is also a wonderful conservation park between Edenvale and Modderfontein that houses a variety of antelope and buck species, as well as over 200 different bird species.

How to get to Edenvale

Edenvale is a mere 15-20 minute drive from OR Tambo International Airport. When leaving the airport and travelling toward the Johannesburg city centre, the 2nd off ramp off the highway will take you directly into the town’s central business area. There are a number of shuttle services that will fetch you from the airport and take you into Edenvale. These can however be slightly pricey and many prefer taking the more traditional African taxis. Depending on where you decide to stay, some hotels and guesthouses will fetch you and take you to the city.

History & general info about Edenvale

Edenvale was ‘started’ in 1903 after the Boer War when a number of Cornish Miners settled into the small village. It was a farming area that was gradually subdivided – the major portions were sold to the Rietfontein Gold Mining Company while the remaining portion of Edenvale was retained by one of the first inhabitants, Mr. Mynhardt. Lots were then sold off and the new owners were induced to lay out the land as townships. Stands were then sold off to the public. With the city starting to grow, a school was opened in Edenvale in 1907. The town then started showing further growth as mining grew – the Rietfontein Mine was closed down and more miners started working in Germiston, with Edenvale being close enough to provide accommodation. The town continued to grow and in 1938 lights and water installations became available, leading to the town being declared a formal village in 1939 and later a Municipality in 1954. The cheap land has since led to many industrialists buying up large parts of the area and creating today’s Sebenza Industrial Township.
