Things to do in Brenton on Sea

Nestled on the shores of the Indian Ocean at the base of Knysna’s Western Head, Brenton on Sea boasts one of the top-twenty beaches in South Africa chosen by Getaway Magazine. The 4.5km beach walk from Brenton on Sea to Buffalo Bay is a popular favourite along the golden sands, and is graded as an easy hike. Hikers can also enjoy Dolphin and Whale spotting from the cliff top paths, or simply enjoy one of the best sunsets in Southern Africa. The 3km stretch of beach offers the ideal setting for swimming, walking and fishing.
Paragliding, for the more adventurous, is a popular pastime in the area. Brenton on Lake provides a jetty and slipway for a wide range of water sports.
Being only 12km from Knysna, Brenton on Sea makes a good base for exploring the wonders of the garden route fom the Knysna Oyster festival to the extreme Simola Festival Nights, a three day multi-sport night time challenge.

How to get to Brenton on Sea

The nearest airport to Brenton on Sea is located in George, a short flight from Cape Town International Airport. George airport is a small local airport only and does not feature international flights.
Cape Town to George by road courses approximately 450km along the N2, which is a well maintained national road and offers many roadside stops in quaint local towns to ease the drive.
The route from George follows the N2 past the picturesque towns of Wilderness and Sedgefield. Beyond Sedgefield the N2 negotiates the Goukamma River valley to the Belvidere turn off. The road continues beyond Belvidere through thronged masses of ericas to reach Brenton on Sea some 6km later.

History & general info about Brenton on Sea

Named after Sir Jaheel Brenton, the British admiral who helped to develop the Knysna harbour, Brenton on Sea was part of the original Melkhoutkraal on which Knysna was also developed.
Brenton on sea is home to the The Brenton Blue Butterfly Reserve, and boasts of one of the rarest butterflies in the world. Geologically the reserve is sited on an ancient dune and spans approximately 2ha and although the park came into being in 1998, it was only proclaimed a Special Nature Reserve in 2003. This national park is a complex mosaic of candlewood thickets and coastal fynbos and offers a home to a wide variety of other insets, mammal and bird species.

Victoria Bay is situated along the Garden Route between George and the Wilderness, approximately 3 km from George and 6km from the Wilderness. Because this beautiful but hidden, little bay forms part of this famous tourist route, a visit to Victoria Bay affords you the opportunity to visit the attractions of not only this tiny village, but the rest of the Garden Route as well. Victoria Bay is simply a collection of beachfront cottages situated on the shore of a secluded beach, surrounded by cliffs on either side. However, because of the gentle slope of the beach, it makes it a very safe place for bathers, and the bigger waves further out to sea have also afforded this little cove a title as a hotspot for surfers. The beach itself offers a man made tidal pool and natural rock pools for young and old to enjoy, and the jetty and local marine life also makes this a popular destination for those who enjoy angling. On the slopes of the nearby cliffs you can find a few hiking trails for families to explore. Visitors can also enjoy a cruise to Seal Island or deep sea fishing and scuba diving. Then there are a few attractions which are not in Victoria Bay but are near enough to be considered a must see. The Oubaai Golf Course is a definite stop for golf enthusiasts and you may even be lucky enough to find Ernie Els teeing off nearby. The Garden Route National Park which spans an impressive 121 000 hectares, runs past this little bay, but don’t expect to see it all in one day, as this park includes the Wilderness and Tsitsikamma National Parks as well as the Knysna Lakes. And lastly there is the famous Outeniqua Choo Tjoe Steam train which journeys for 3 hours through the countryside between George and Knysna, passing through Victoria Bay. The Garden Route is also the hub of many outdoor adventure activities such as fishing, hang-gliding, diving, water skiing, cycling, canoeing, climbing, hiking, sailing, windsurfing and surfing to name a few.

How to get to Victoria Bay

George Airport is the closest airport to Victoria Bay. Unfortunately, being such a small airport, not all airlines offer flights to this airport and the tickets can, at certain times be costly. The best option for travellers is to take a flight to Cape Town International airport, and then hire a car and enjoy the 5 to 6 hour scenic 436 km drive along the N2 highway, all through the Garden Route until you pass through George. Victoria Bay is situated 3km from the N2. Alternatively, instead of hiring a car, you could always make use of the long distance bus services but the same trip would probably take more time because of scheduled stops.

History & general info about Victoria Bay

Victoria Bay was originally called Gunter Bay and was used to land goods from ships because of the safety of the bay and gentle slope of the land. It was later renamed Victoria Bay in honour of the reigning sovereign at the time. This bay is extremely popular with surfers all year round, and many surfing competitions have been held here because of the suitable conditions. The gentle slope of the underwater beach which made this bay a favourable spot to land goods in the 1840’s, now ensures that the large waves which form far out to sea last longer, affording surfers a much longer ride.

How to get to Herolds Bay

Herolds bay is conveniently situated just 5 minutes drive for George Airport. Just turn right onto the R404, travel under the N2 and 8km will bring you into town. The town is 20 km from central George and a scenic 440 km drive from Cape Town, it is well signposted a short distance off the N2 on the R404 on the Cape Town side of George. Taxis and hire cars are available at the George airport and most accommodation will also arrange a transfer for you.

The town is named after Rev. Tobais Herold, the first minister of the dutch reform church in George. The area is renowned for its healthy Mediterranean Maritime climate with warm summers and cool winters. Rainfall occurs in moderate amounts in both summer and winter.
