Kenton on Sea, where two rivers meet the sea is known for its idyllic beaches and nature reserves that seem to go on forever. This little town finds its place between the mouths of the Karieger and Bushman’s Rivers. It is also rumoured to be the place where the sun takes its holiday during the winter months. Kenton on Sea offers a variety of activities, and caters to many. These include Game watching (at either Sibuya game reserve or Shamwari game reserve), bird watching (due to the rivers edge, seaside and nature reserve), and water sporting activities, such as summer sailing, swimming or simply taking it easy (the two Rivers are only two kilometers apart). How to get to Kenton on Sea

Travel along the N2 from Port Elizabeth towards Grahamstown, There are two routes that can be used to get there. Route 1: Drive along the R72 towards Port Alfred via Alexandria where you turn inland for a distance of 14 kilometers on the R343, from there you should be able to find Kenton on Sea. Route 2: Continue on the N2 towards Grahamstown for roughly 110 kilometers, then turn right on to the R343 and travel for a distance of about 32 kilometers.

History & general info about Kenton on Sea

There are many different stories about where the town gets its name from, two of the most popular include; that it’s named after the county of Kenton in Kentucky USA or the capital of Hardin in Ohio. Kenton on Sea is rich in Xhosa and Koisan history dating back to the 14th century, it also pays homage to a number of Voortrekker historical sites. In the 1800’s it was used as a ‘go-between’ settlement as it is conveniently placed between regularly used ports. Kenton on Sea can well be called one of South Africa’s gems in the rough, as this blissful seaside/ riverside town is untouched and untainted by mass development.
