Bloemfontein info

Bloemfontein is the judicial capital of South Africa. It was officially founded in 1846 as a fort by British army major Henry Douglas Warden as a British outpost in the Transoranje region. With colonial policy shifts, the region changed into the Orange River Sovereignty (1848–1854) and eventually the Orange Free State Republic (1854–1902). From 1902–1910 it served as the capital of the Orange River Colony. In 1910 it became the Judicial capital of the Union of South Africa.

Things to do: Bloemfontein is poetically known as the City of Roses, and offers visitors a choice of activities. The annual Rose Festival held here is worth timing your visit for. The National Botanical Garden is home to over 400 species of plants and boasts an orange blossom arbour and a petrified tree, thought to be over 150 million years’ old. Visitors can try skydiving at all experience levels with the Bloemfontein skydiving club, which is one of the oldest skydiving clubs in the country. The Choet Visser Rugby Museum was first opened in 1974 and houses jerseys and rugby related blazers as well as original, signed cartoons and pictures of teams and. For rugby fans a visit to this museum is a very rewarding experience. The Boyden Observatory, offers magnified star gazing to the public. The UFS Boyden refractor is the third largest operational telescope in Africa. Bloemfontein offers plenty of battlefield sites and good place to start is the Anglo-Boer War Museum. Believed to be the only museum in the world dedicated to the Anglo Boer War, it displays artefacts from the war as well as a Women’s Memorial. Freshford House Museum is one of the few houses of the Edwardian Period that still exists and well worth a visit. A fisherman’s paradise, Maselspoort is a mere 23km from Bloemfontein, and offers a choice of leisure facilities from a golf course, bowls, squash and wonderful angling opportunities and a great place for a picnic. The Modder River makes for the perfect place to spend a day relaxing.
