Addo info
Addo is located at one of the ancient fording places on the Sundays River. The original Khoikhoi name was ÒKradouwÓ, meaning Òthe way across the riverÓ. As farming intensified, the farmers came into conflict with the local elephants which were destroying their crops and a hunter was hired to exterminate them. In 1931 there were only eleven elephants remaining, the government stepped in and created a sanctuary now known as the Addo Elephant National Park. The area has featured conflict through the ages by the San, Hottentot, Xhosa, and white Afrikaner and British migrants and many artifacts have been found in the area.
Things to do: The word Addo immediately brings the Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape Province to mind. Addo itself, however, has much more to offer. The climate and soil are ideally suited to farming roses and the annual Addo Rose & Garden Show held in Addo during October is well worth timing your visit for. Visits to Citrus and Rose farms are also on offer in the area. Botanically, Addo contains five of the country's seven biomes. Game farms abound in the area and the neighbouring Kirkwood, hosts the renowned annual "Wildsfees" or Game Festival in June. Day and night trips can be made to Addo Elephant National Park and the experience is an unforgettable one. A trip to Addo is not complete without a visit to the Croc and Lion Ranch where crocodiles, lions, tigers and many other species of wild animals can be seen. The town also offers many scenic drives and day trips in area as well as trips up the historic Zuurberg Mountain Pass. The Daniell Cheetah breeding project, offers a Òonce-in-a-lifetimeÕ experience where visitors not only get an interesting, personalized tour, but actually get to interact with the animals. It is situated on the R75 national road, about 45 min drive from Addo.
