Richards Bay Guide

Situated just over an hour and a half from Durban, Richards Bay, as its name suggests, is a beautiful harbour bay, sheltered by the ocean.

QUICK GUIDE:

Richards Bay is your quintessential harbour town.  The hub of the town, the harbour, is always full of ships and people and the outlying conservation areas also beg for a visit.  The air is salty and fresh, the people are friendly, the weather is great and there is always something to do.  Richards Bay has certainly grown from its humble beginnings as simply a ships port to being a town where families, couples and friends alike all flock to for an escape from the busy cities.  It is almost like an intermediary town between a large, bustling city and a quiet, seaside town.  It has beautiful beaches with plenty of outdoor activities.  It also has activities for those less inclined to the outdoors, namely in its busy Boardwalk Shopping Centre.

HINTS/TIPS:

Richards Bay experiences a warm summer climate all year round and so visits during the winter are just as enjoyable.  However, it is prone to thunderstorms during winter so do not forget your umbrella.  The town is also very windy so be sure to wear your sunglasses on the beach or you will find yourself strewn with sand blown up by the wind.

MSUT DO’S

Obviously, Richards Bay is a harbour town, so a visit to the Small Craft Harbour is a must.  Visit the famous Snow Haven at the harbour and sample the wide variety of traditional milkshakes and ice cream flavours.  Also visit the biltong store next door to taste some of the finest of this South African snack in the country.  Richards Bay’s beaches are usually full of kite surfers so take yours along and give it a go.  Jet skiing and surfing are also popular activities.  Take the family or some friends and have a braai on the beach – there are few things more traditionally South African than that.  Visit the Game Reserve and see the indigenous birds, hippos and crocodiles that reside there.  Hire a bicycle and go cycling around the harbour and surrounding areas.  These views are easily missed when driving in the car.  If you get bored of the beach visit the Boardwalk Shopping Centre for some retail therapy.  Lastly, a night on the town is not complete unless you visit the cocktail bar, Zacks.  It attracts a wide variety of types thus ensuring you will always be entertained and have a good time.
