For a lazy tropical summer holiday, Port Elizabeth, South Africa's second oldest city, is your answer. Otherwise known as the windy city, PE has something for everyone and a trip to this salty city will leave you with scorching memories to get through any winter cold.
QUICK GUIDE:
As is evident from the introduction, a holiday to PE, is the essential beach holiday. This is because its beaches are world renowned and its laid back feel makes even the working residents feel like they are on one long extended holiday. The city has very little crime and it is widely boasted that one can get anywhere in the city in under 20 minutes – so no traffic or road rage to put a halt to your relaxation. Many holiday-goers even forego cars, buses and other transportation in favour of walking to their destination as its safe, quick and the best way to fully experience the beauty of the city.
HINTS/TIPS:
PE’s stable, gorgeous weather climate allows for water sports to be enjoyed any time of the year so visiting in winter is just as fun as it is in summer. And remember the most important thing to pack, if nothing else, is your swimming costume.
MUST DO’S
Absolute must do’s, non-negotiable things you have to do in PE are anything that can be done on or near the sea such as swimming, sunbathing, surfing, yachting, jet-skiing, and of course, sundowners on the beach. Two of the most popular beaches are ST. George and Humewood, which have both been awarded blue flag status. Scuba diving is perfect for those who wish to see the old shipwrecks, unusual fish and reefs that are dotted along the coast. A once in a lifetime experience is a photo safari, where you travel far out into the sea and capture on film the whales, sharks and dolphins of the Indian Ocean. For an on land animal adventure visit the Seaview Lion Park where you can watch and even play with young lion cubs – definitely something you do not want to miss. Lastly, for something unexpected and a touch of Hollywood glamour, visit the ST. Croix Motor Museum which houses numerous, one of a kind vintage cars.
