The capital of the Limpopo Province, Polokwane (meaning place of safety) is a city of incredible beauty. Easily accessible by air, bus or car, it offers much to the nature lover, historian and hunter.
QUICK GUIDE:
Polokwane is a rare gem offering some of the most exciting, adventurous get-aways. The most difficult part of your holiday will be choosing which activity to do first. A place of myths and legends, one can learn about the culture and lifestyle of the Bakone people at the Bakone Malopa Northern Sotho Open Air Museum. Apart from being the premiere hunting destination of South Africa, there is the Eersteling monument- the site of the country’s first gold crushing site. The Savannah Centre, a modern shopping venue, is a welcome relief after a trip to the Polokwane Game Reserve, which has more than 21 species of wildlife.
HINTS/TIPS:
A visit in summer will be during the rainy season so be warned – sunblock and umbrellas are a must. Winter is decidedly dry, so take plenty of refreshments on those long bush walks.
MUST DO’S:
A visit to the Cheuve Crocodile Farm is fascinating, as is a trip to the Makaponsgat Caves and Limestone works. For the family there is the Polokwane Bird and Reptile Park. To buy curios and handmade goods made by the local people pay a visit to the Bush Craft Centre. To view the memorials of the victims of the Anglo-Boer War Concentration Camps visit the Concentration Camp Cemetery. Finally, no visit to this beautiful part of South Africa would be complete without seeing the Modjadji Rainforest.
