Nestled between the picturesque
Outeniqua Mountains and the warm Indian Ocean is the
capital of the Garden Route, George. It is easily accessible
by air, road and railway and is halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
QUICK GUIDE
Founded in 1811, George is the sixth oldest town in
South Africa. Its unique beauty is accentuated by the
fact that while it is sheltered by the Outeniqua Mountains,
it is also only a mere ten kilometers from the balmy
beach. The town of George is one of the few places that
has simultaneously managed to keep up with the times
yet still retains its old country charm.
HINTS AND TIPS
George enjoys a Mediterranean climate which allows for
gloriously hot summers and chilled winters so you are
warned dress accordingly. A good thing to note
is that the airport is only seven kilometers from the
city centre so if you miss your taxi it is not too far
to trek.
MUST DOS
First and foremost, George is a golf lovers paradise,
so a visit to one of the famous golf courses is a must
do. Fancourt Golf Course, designed by Gary Player, is
so beautiful and enticing that even those of you who
are not that keen on golf will also find something to
enjoy. For all of you other sports enthusiasts, there
is surfing, swimming, hiking and cycling to enjoy. For
culture vultures other must sees are the Railway Museum
and the Slave Tree which has a large chain and lock
embedded in its trunk. The Outeniqua choo-tjoe, which
starts and ends in George, attracts railway buffs, families
and nature lovers. It is a three hour trip on one of
the worlds last working steam locomotives through
forests, lakes and elevated bridges. Last but not least,
a trip to George is not complete until you have experienced
the Outeniqua Hop which involves visits to Hop (beer),
strawberry and cheese farms as well as a variety of
craft markets.
