Despite it’s miniscule size (Mauritius measures only 1860 square km in size - of that, there are about 10 square km’s of lakes and a coastline measuring 177km), the island features world class hotels, a renowned gastronomy, top spa’s, golf courses, mountain climbing, hiking, as well as a whole host of eco-tourism activities. It’s lagoons and surrounding coral reefs also make the island a divers and snorkelers’ paradise. The island itself is sub-divided into nine districts, and free transport is offered to students, the disables, doctors and seniors. Whilst no language has been declared as the ‘official’ Mauritian language, English is generally accepted as the main language with strong Creole and French influences as well.
Places to Visit in Mauritius
When considering Mauritius, one generally thinks only of the beautiful beaches and resorts. There are, however, a number of other exciting places to visit on the island. The Mauritius Gymkhana Golf Club, established in 1844, has the prestigious title of being the oldest golf course in the southern hemisphere. Some of the island’s other golf courses can prove quite challenging – there is one that has been carved out of sugar cane fields and another features fairways that require you to hit the ball over parts of the sea in order to reach them…challenging yet beautiful. Mauritius also lays claim to a number of nature reserves. Most well known is the Casela Nature Park, but there are a handful of others that all house antelope, zebra, wild pigs and a host of exotic birds. This beautiful scenery also means that hiking trails are abundant and the long trails are a beautiful alternative to the beach. For a bit of a shopping excursion, the bustling capital of Mauritius, Port Louis, is the perfect solution. The Central Market sells just about anything, and Champ De Mars (the oldest racecourse in the southern hemisphere) hosts racing events every Saturday or Sunday afternoon from May to November. And for those who are curious about some of the island’s history, the L’Aventure du Sucre museum will tell you all you need to know about the island’s most famous export…sugarcane.
