Australia Flights
Australia is not only the biggest island in
the world, but it’s also the only country in the world that
occupies a single continent. Although many believe that New Zealand is
Australia’s nearest neighbor, it is in fact Papua New Guinea. The
island itself is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the
Southern Ocean, the Tasman Sea, the Coral Sea and the Arafura Sea.
Australia is a melting pot of diverse landscapes – from large,
rugged deserts, to tropical rainforests, to expansive mountain ranges.
The island is often associated with being very spacious – the
harsh Australian outback is well known for its vast savanna land,
it’s nomadic deserts, the rocky outcrops and the dry salt lakes.
Because of this huge (fairly unfriendly) area, about 84% of the
country’s 20 million people live in the cities around the coast
– a mere 1% of this vast continent. These coastal settlements are
a spectacular contrast to the stark outback. Here, especially along the
eastern coastline, attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef,
rainforests, wine farms, bird-filled wetlands and breath-taking beaches
are the norm. Australia is made up of 6 states and 2 internal
territories. The main language spoken on the continent is English. The
people are very tourist-oriented and encourage visitors as a way to
expand their economy. The temperature is very varied, but along the
eastern coastline (the area that see’s most tourists) the climate
is temperate to tropical and the areas are beautiful and fertile.
Places to Visit
Sydney is the main entry point for most
people into Australia and offers a host of “must-see”
attractions. The most recognizable of these is undoubtedly the Sydney
Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Here you can go to a concert or simply
have a drink at the Opera House bar, take a ferry trip through the
harbour or, for those feeling more adventurous, climb the Sydney
Harbour Bridge for a breath-taking view of the harbour. Uluru, also
known as Ayers Rock, is another of Australia’s top attractions.
Some refer to this natural wonder as rock and some call it a monolite,
but this beautiful attraction in the heart of the outback near Alice
Springs is worth seeing. A trip to Tasmania reveals the Cradle Mountain
and Lake St. Clair National Park. This world heritage area see’s
the 1,545m mountain range dominating the northern part of the island,
and the beautiful lakes, majestic plains, forests and rivers all make
for a magnificent getaway. The largest coral reef in the world is
another natural wonder housed in Australia. The Great Barrier Reef
located in Queensland is the perfect area for taking a cruise, doing
some diving or just relaxing on the magnificent beaches. And if
breath-taking views are your thing then a trip to The Great Ocean Road
in Victoria should be one of your must-see visits. It’s only a
few hours outside of Melbourne and shows beautiful sea views as well as
the famous 12 Apostles (giant monoliths of rock caused by extensive
wind and sea erosion).
Airports in Australia
With Australia’s extensive tourist
appeal, there are airports spread throughout the continent. Besides a
number of unpaved airports that service some of the domestic travel
needs, there are also a number of paved local airports. The main
airports include Canberra International Airport in Canberra, Darwin
International Airport in Darwin, Sydney Airport in Sydney, Cairns
International Airport in Cairns, Adelaide Airport in Adelaide, Broome
