Korea
is a nation currently divided into 2
states – North Korea and South Korea. South Korea is
officially known as the Republic of Korea, while North Korea is known
as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. This Asian
civilization is bordered by both China and Russia. Korea is abundant in
historical sites and fortresses, temples and palaces (many of which
have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites) can be found throughout
the country. Korea is one of the most mountainous regions in the world,
and the coastline has beaches scattered throughout. In addition to the
rich heritage sites and beautiful natural resources, Korea is also a
modern marvel. Futuristic skyscrapers and a buzz of activity
characterize cities such as the capital, Seoul. Korea has a large
population – North and South Korea combined house
approximately
73 million people. The majority of these people live in South Korea
(about 50 million). Korean is the most widely spoken language in the
country but, because of its proximity to and links with China, Mandarin
does also feature somewhat.
Places
to Visit in Korea
The
number one attraction for many tourists
is the Republic of Korea’s capital, Seoul. Besides the many
attractions, the city has excellent transport links that makes getting
around quick and easy. One of the most astonishing attractions of the
city is the presence of the 5 royal palaces, some of which date back to
the 15th century. The palaces have a host of attractions, including
exquisite gardens, ancient artifacts, and even museums. The city also
has a bustling nightlife that will appeal especially to younger
travelers. The ancient Korean capital, Gyeongji, is also a definite
must-see. Described as one of the 10 most important cultural cities in
the world, Gyeongji has a rich collection of relics, tombs and temples.
Nature-lovers will be spoilt for choice with Korea’s national
parks. Seorak-san in South Korea is especially breathtaking. Whilst in
the Seorak-san National Park, a visit to their spa resort is a definite
must. Here, natural hot springs, lemon flavoured pools and near boiling
waterfall showers are all a welcome relief for tired
travelers.
