Housing
the world’s largest population
(1.3 billion people), China is fast emerging as a global player worth
keeping an eye on. The 2008 Olympic Games showcased the country and
brought to light it’s rich diversity and modern architectural
and
engineering marvels. China has a sad history of upheaval and Civil War.
However, it’s not allowing this to bring it down. Since the
1990’s, China has been on the up and up and can now boast the
world’s fastest growing major economy and all it’s
main
cities are emerging as cosmopolitan global centers. The city also has
major cultural and historical ties, with 37 places being declared
UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Chinese food is enjoyed throughout the
world, and Chinese art forms such as acrobatics, martial arts and
Chinese opera are well regarded.
Places
to Visit in China
A trip
to China should include a stopover in
Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China. Here,
a
mixing pot of politics, culture and diverse nations meet in modern city
life. Some of the great places to see in Beijing include the Great
Wall, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven and
Yashow Market. The biggest city in northwest China is Xian, also called
Changan. The city has much cultural value and contains sites such as
the famous Terracotta Army, the Banpo Museum, the Xian Great Mosque,
Huaqing Hotsprings and the Shaanxi Provincial Museum. A trip to central
eastern China reveals the city’s largest metropolitan area,
Shanghai. Some important sites worth visiting here include the Shanghai
Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Yuyuan
Garden, Shanghai Museum and the Shanghai Huangpu River. A wonderful
getaway for those looking for something romantic is the Yangtze River.
Here, river cruises come through the mountains and the cities from the
west to the east. Lhasa Tibet is often referred to as “the
Roof
of the World” and is a major religious stopover for many.
Translated as “The land of the gods”, Lhasa is full
of
mysterious religions, snow capped mountains and exotic traditions.
