Cheap Windhoek Flights

In the Central Highlands of Namibia you will find the small, German-influenced city of Windhoek. This is Namibia’s capital and is surrounded by hills and mountains. You can see the German influence everywhere, from the architecture to the to the food and beer. Polony and sauerkraut are among local menu favourites throughout the city. The people are friendly and unimposing, with some of the most distinctive being the women of the Herero tribe. These women are the region’s cattle herders and can be seen wandering around in their voluminous Victorian-style dresses and colourful headgear. There is, however, a large ethnic mix in the city – there is a constant mix of Owambo, Kavango, Herero, Damara and Caprivian people, all hustling together with the Nama, San and Europeans. The town can be a bustle of activity but after working hours you can expect quiet and stillness.

Places to Visit in Windhoek

Christuskirche is considered to be Windhoek’s most recognizable landmark. The German Lutheran building can be found atop a traffic island at the top of Fidel Castro Street. The beautiful architecture is a combination of neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau styles, and has many people coming to admire the sandstone masterpiece. The Daan Viljoen Game Park is another great tourist attraction. Situated just west of Windkoek, the park contains no seriously dangerous animals, which means that you are free to walk through the area and admire the various buck, zebra, warthogs and wildebeests. In the centre of the Post St Mall, one can find a display of meteorites. These meteorites all come from the famous Gibeon meteor shower that saw more that 21 tonnes of boulders being deposited around Gibeon in southern Namibia. With its Germanic influence, Namibia Breweries is worth a visit. Previously the home of Windhoek Lager, the brewery now offers tours by appointment on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are also a number of “arty” destinations in Windhoek, including the National Art Gallery, the Owela (State) Museum, the National Museum of Namibia and the National Theatre of Namibia.
