At the end of the sunshine coast in the Eastern Cape is East London. Also known as buffalo city, East London is the only river port in South Africa.
QUICK GUIDE:
East London is a sun and beach worshipper’s mecca. Its laid back attitude to life and genuine hospitality of the residents guarantee you a relaxing, memorable holiday. This safe city is perfect for a family get-away. East London is renowned for its pristine, white beaches which include Nahoon Beach and Ganubie Bay. The city’s restaurants offer up some of the yummiest cuisine you will ever find and it has something for everyone, from history buffs, sports enthusiasts, beachcombers and culture junkies. The city also has a thriving nightlife so your day does not have to end when the sun sets on the beach.
HINTS/TIPS
The city has a subtropical climate which allows for excellent weather all year round. This is good for those who wish to avoid the summer crowds yet still want to catch some rays and go waterskiing. Although the airport is quite small, it is efficient and is a mere 10km from the city centre. East London can also be reached by the N2 highway.
MUST DO’S
The most popular activities in the city are obviously those which involve the sand and surf such as sunbathing, skiing, fishing and sailing. For something a little different, go horse-back riding on the beach at sunset or try sandboarding down the grandiose sand dunes at Bonza Bay. Visit the Natural History Museum where you can see the only dodo egg in the world, and of course the Coelacanth, the prehistoric fish which was discovered in the city in 1938. An absolute must are the Nahoon footprints which are 200,000 years old and are the oldest footprints in the world. Visit Latimer’s landing, a waterfront with a variety of restaurants to suite any palate, with magnificent views of the ocean. Also interesting is Lock Street Gaol which used to be a fully functioning prison but now contains unique shops and little boutiques.
