Which airlines fly to Johannesburg
OR Tambo Airport is one of the busiest in Africa, and as such every airline that flies into and within South Africa, has Johannesburg as a destination. Most international flights that originate in one of the other cities (such as Cape Town or Durban), first fly to Johannesburg for the connecting international leg of the flight. Domestically the following airlines fly to or from Johannesburg, British Airways South Africa, SAA Airlines, kulula, and Mango airlines. Internationally, the list is quite a bit longer, but includes, SAA, BA, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, Qantas, United, Thai Airways etc.
Typical prices for flights to Johannesburg
Being that Johannesburg is such a busy airport, and with most flights being business oriented, or indirect flights to other destinations, there are always plenty of options when flying to Johannesburg. Prices vary considerably though depending on the airline you fly with and when you choose to fly. Here are some sample prices. From Cape Town, it will be around R1500 return per person, from Durban it would be around R1250 return per person, from George it is around R2000 return per person, and from Bloemfontein it is around R3000 return per person. You can see how the prices change, depending on the competitiveness of the route. For example, Bloemfontein is a lot closer to Johannesburg than Cape Town, but the flight price is almost double.
How to get cheap flights to Johannesburg
Being that Johannesburg is such a busy airport, whenever airlines have specials, they will almost always include flights to/from Johannesburg. What really matters is where the flight is coming from. (here’s an article on how to find cheap flights in general). Being that the focus of a flight special is typically on the destination “from” Johannesburg, you can typically pick up decent prices when you book a oneway flight to Johannesburg. Then you should look at booking your return, as a one way flight as well. Being that Johannesburg is a business hub, your best bet at finding a cheap flight to it are to book outside of popular business flying times, so stay away from Monday mornings, and afternoon flights.

Johannesburg, the City of Gold, is the financial centre of Africa. Highlights include Gold Reef City, Kruger Park and Sandton shopping. However the main pull of Johannesburg is the energy of the poeple who live and work there. It is the largest city in South Africa and is truly expansive.
Joburg is not traditionally a tourist destination but is a gate way to Cape Town, Magaliesberg and the Kruger National park .
Johannesburg International Airport has the official name of OR Tambo International Airport. It has been going through massive redevelopment as part of the upgrades done by ACSA for the 2010 world cup. It is a massive airport and is the main airport that international tourists use to get to South Africa. It is the busiest airport in Africa (by passenger numbers).
The airport was the first involved with the jet age development with the first jet engine flight from London to Johannesburg. The airport is about 15 minutes from Sandton, and the best way to get there is either to drive or to take the Gautrain.
Johannesburg has relatively mild weather compared to the rest of the country. Winters do get cold but the extreme cold is only really in the early morning and the late evening (night). Summer is very decent with hot days and warm evenings, but nothing like the heat of Durban.
