Airlines tighten security on America Flights
Airlines around the world are heeding the call by US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) following the 'incident' on a NorthWest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. A Nigerian passenger (Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab) attempted to ignite explosives that he had obtained from al-Qaeda in Yemen just outside of Detroit, but was unable to and prevented by fellow passengers and the crew. Just how the passenger was able to get the explosives onboard is still under contention, but the thought is that complete and proper screening and security checks were not carried out. The particular type of explosive would not be detected by a metal detector or an x-ray machine. As a result the TSA have called on airlines around the world to increase their pre-screening as well as onboard screening of passengers. In addition no passengers will be allowed out of their seats for the last hour of the flight. SAA Airlines is one of the airlines that has increased their security checks as a result of this, so for anyone flying to America from South Africa, please allow additional time for these, in other words...get their atleast 4 hours before your flight. |
